1. In 2009, people in the UK spent £37m on cupcakes.

2. The English also call them fairy cakes.

3. They are called 'cup' cakes because the ingredients were all measured in cups. Just like 'pound' cakes. And not because they were baked in small little cups. 

4. Then they were also known as 1234 cakes because the simpler version of cupcakes only require 1 cup of butter, 2 cups of sugar, 3 cups of flour and 4 eggs.

5. Now, any type of cakes which are baked in small cups are called cupcakes; be it chocolate cake, carrot cake, or any other.
